I had the privilege of speaking to the Sunset Elementary Ecology Club.
We did not have an ecology club when I was in elementary school, so special recognition needs to be given to the teachers who organize the club, the parents who bring their kids to school early, and the students who are excited about the environment.
The students had amazing questions, and were genuinely concerned about the issue of marine debris. They asked about the North Pacific Garbage Patch, oil spills, and microplastics. But more impressively they knew a lot about the issue.
After a brief lesson about debris, we did a little art project. I had brought with me a painted three panel mural of an octopus, and interesting and colorful pieces of trash that I had collected throughout a handful of cleanups in the past month. The students were given artistic license to mosaic the panel as they saw fit.
Thanks Mrs. Kauffman for inviting me, and taking photos!
