These maps are fabulous.
Amalgamating data from numerous marine debris research papers and surveys, the two maps produce by Alfred Wegener Institute show location of samples, composition, and animal interactions.
The visual is a little shocking. We talk about this being a global problem, but until you see how ubiquitous trash is across our globe, it’s easy to think that it’s just a local issue. They also give a very nice summary and analysis of the global issue.
The best part? Each dot is also linked directly to the scientific publication fully cited. Meaning it is a great way to find information, look at the sources, and learn more. It’s going to take me weeks to get through all of them.
