The United States is seriously lagging in the global fight against marine litter. In the last election an intense battle was fought in California, which became the first state to ban plastic bags. In response, a number of states passed legislation banning such bans (read more here). But around the world countries are taking big steps to try and reduce their plastic footprint. India and Indonesia are two of the leaders. In this latest move, India’s capital city of Delhi has moved beyond banning one type of plastic (bags) and moved to banning all disposable plastics including bags, bottles, cups, utensils, straws, etc. I would expect this to have huge impacts on their marine litter footprint.
